Natural Resources Specialist III - Forest Inventory Analysis (FIA) Specialist
Position #00168 – Western Region (western part of Virginia)
Hiring Range: $31,352 minimum – starting salary depends on experience (Pay Band 4)
Location: Within six months of hire, incumbent is required to live in Virginia within a 50-mile radius of Marion.
Duties: Incumbent performs forest resource data collection for the Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA). Duties include: establishing and measuring permanent forest sample plots; identifying and classifying forest stand histories and stand management opportunities; providing on-the-job training to other field personnel on data collection procedures; conducting detailed standing tree volume measurements; and analyzing logging methods to determine multiple product utilization. Incumbent uses and calibrates complex measuring instruments, electronic data recorders, and global position system (GPS) receivers; and enters, edits, and manages data collected in digital form using field data records and computers.
Qualifications: Bachelor’s in Forest Management or related natural resources field; or equivalent field experience required. Inventory Certification by the U.S. Forest Service – FIA preferred. Professional knowledge of scientific forestry principles and concepts; practical knowledge of conventional forest measurement and management methods and techniques; skill in use of standard forest management tools on standing and felled trees; skill in the use of maps, compasses, and pacing while traveling across forested terrain; ability to walk over rough terrain while carrying equipment; ability to identify tree species and associated vegetation; ability to recognize different types of vegetative cover, species, composition, and terrain from aerial photos or other remote sensing; ability to recognize stand histories and identify stand management opportunities; ability to use GPS units and other electronic equipment; valid driver’s license; ability and willingness to travel often with overnight stays; ability to work in a team environment; and establish and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse team of personnel required. Selected candidate is required to be fingerprinted and pass a criminal background check.
